ABOUT THE PROJECT
Local host is an interactive website that explores how digital design can surface the material and ecological realities of the internet. It began with a guiding question: How can design and code make the material and ecological realities of the internet more visible? While we often experience websites as weightless interfaces, disconnected from the data centers and environmental costs that sustain them, this project seeks to reframe that perception.
Hosted on a local server and connected to environmental sensors, the site detects real-time changes in light, temperature, and sound. These inputs dynamically shape the site’s interface, allowing it to respond to its physical surroundings. In doing so, this website makes the often-invisible systems that power the internet part of the user experience, foregrounding the invisible systems behind everyday digital interactions.
